Changing residence can be an overwhelming experience unless you avoid these 6 common moving mistakes. I always recommend that my clients prepare for their move to ease their burden. Simple preparation can save you time, money and major headaches, even if you are turning the project over to someone else. Here are some suggestions:
1) DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE
Keep in mind; moving tasks will take you longer than you anticipate. As soon as you know your moving date, start the process. Do as many things as possible in advance.
2) NEVER DO IT YOURSELF
Get the professionals on your side. Movers have the experience and equipment to manage everything, especially when it comes to heavy items.
3) DO YOUR RESEARCH
The dos and don’ts when researching moving companies:
-Ask friends, family, and neighbors for suggestions.
-Look the company up at the Better Business Bureau.
-Ask to see a list of the company’s references
-Call for a referral.
-Ask how the company charges.
-Ask if there are any additional costs and if tips are included.
-Ask if their company insures your things during transit.
-Ask if they will be moving your things directly or if another company is involved.
-Carefully review all documentation that the company provides.
-Make sure someone is present as your things are being loaded and unloaded.
-Take a picture of all valuable things and furniture prior to having them loaded.
-Don’t do business with a company that only accepts cash.
-Don’t sign any paperwork until you make sure all of your items have arrived and are in good condition.
-Don’t wait! If anything is wrong, damaged or missing file a claim immediately!
-Don’t ever pack anything with extreme value. Jewelry, cash, and personal or tax papers should be taken with you.
4) START UP AND SHUT OFF OF UTILITIES
Don’t forget this important step. If you plan it correctly, you can time the turn on and turn off to happen simultaneously!
5) BOXES NEED TO BE LABELED
Simply labeling your boxes by room and item will cut organization times in half and a boat-load of frustration.
6) THE IMPORTANCE OF PACKING
Package things properly, which means securely wrapping in bubble wrap when necessary.
